Stress can creep in from almost anything—a long customer service call, an unexpected storm, a tense conversation, or even realizing the snack you were craving has already been eaten.
Whatever the trigger, stress can hijack your focus and mood. That’s why nervous system regulation is so important. It’s how we recover quickly and choose how we want to move through the day, instead of letting outside events run the show.
When life throws you off balance, try these three quick resets for nervous system regulation.
1. The Butterfly Hug 🦋
The butterfly hug is a simple self-soothing tool. Cross your arms over your chest, place your hands on your upper arms or shoulders, and gently tap—first on one side, then the other.
This slow, alternating rhythm can:
- Calm your body’s stress response
- Synchronize the left and right hemispheres of your brain
- Help you process experiences instead of carrying them unresolved
The butterfly hug is portable, discreet, and effective when emotions feel overwhelming.
2. Drink a Glass of Water 💧
During one particularly rough customer service ordeal, I found myself in tears. A support rep offered me the simplest reminder: drink a glass of water.
Even mild dehydration affects mood and concentration. Since the brain is about 73% water, replenishing it is a direct way to support nervous system regulation.
Skip the caffeine or sugar—just plain water can restore balance and promote emotional stability.
3. Move Your Body 🕺
Movement is one of the fastest ways to shift state. Physical activity releases endorphins that lift your mood and help your nervous system reset.
- If you’re wound up: Slow your pace. Take a gentle walk indoors or outside, letting your body signal safety.
- If you’re shut down: Do the opposite. Put on upbeat music and dance, bounce, or shake your arms and legs.
Either way, movement brings you back into your body so stress doesn’t stay stuck.
Building Resilience
What these strategies have in common is that they all invite you to pause, check in, and give your system what it needs. That’s the heart of nervous system regulation—learning to reset and recover instead of staying hijacked by stress.
✨ Next time you feel your day getting derailed, try one of these techniques and notice the shift.
In my coaching practice, I guide women in midlife and beyond to use somatic tools like these so they can feel better, think more clearly, and act with intention. If you’d like support building your own toolkit, let’s connect.
